New Playmates in the Age of Intelligence

From:Social Sciences Weekly2023-12-23 12:41

With the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI), children are increasingly interacting with robots, states Deng Shichang, Lin Zihan, Lu Yuqian, and Li Xiangqian in “Advances in Psychological Science” Vol.12, 2023. Children are more likely to be drawn to anthropomorphic robots, exploring robots based on their interests and regarding robots as beings or quasi-living objects. While interacting with robots, they are more inclined to embrace robots as intimate companions and to seek emotional comfort and protection from them in their relationships. Children will develop cognitive and metacognitive abilities, an interest in learning, and social willingness and empathy through interaction with the robot; however, the robot’s incapacity to provide frankness and feedback may have a negative impact on children’s social development. As a result, the design, approach, and depth of relevant studies must be expanded in order to conduct longitudinal and cross-cultural study into the causes and settings of children’s interactions with robots.
