The Internet’s Impact on Traditional Division of Labor Concepts

From:Social Sciences Weekly2024-7-16 10:35

In the 2024 third issue of the “Population Journal,” Li Qingyuan articulates that the swift progression of digital technologies, particularly the Internet, has laid the groundwork for advancing the concepts of gender roles and achieving a more equitable gender division of labor. The Internet stands out among other factors such as education, offering unparalleled advantages in the realm of information dissemination, knowledge sharing, and cultural exchange.

Firstly, the Internet plays a pivotal role in fostering a contemporary understanding of gender roles among individuals, leading to a more egalitarian perception of gender roles in various aspects such as capabilities, professional rights, and domestic responsibilities.

Secondly, despite its current influence on reshaping gender role perceptions, the Internet’s capacity to alter the dynamics of family division of labor is still quite constrained. The evolution of family division of labor continues to be swayed by entrenched social norms and the availability of resources.

Under the influence of the Internet, the principle of gender equality has gained broader acceptance, and the disparity in gender role perceptions between men and women has been narrowing. However, the journey towards achieving a truly equitable gender division of labor remains a gradual process.
