"Well-Ordered Science" Forges a New Vision in the Philosophy of Science

From:Social Sciences Weekly2024-11-19 10:52

In their contribution to the 5th issue of 2024 "Studies in Philosophy of Science and Technology," Feng Chao and Wang Jun believes "Well-Ordered Science" represents an idealized approach to achieving the efficient governance of scientific practices. According to them, investigating the philosophical underpinnings of "Well-Ordered Science" is intrinsic to advocating for the orderly progression of science. Scientific practices are embedded within the fabric of socio-historical contexts, with a multitude of actors engaged in a complex, heterogeneous network of relationships that influence and shape the delineation of scientific goals and progress. From the point of generative logic, the philosophical foundations of "Well-Ordered Science" are manifested in two theoretical dimensions: the cognitive normative scale and the ideal of scientific democratization. These dimensions run concurrently in the argumentative framework, each occupying its own discursive realm, and ultimately converging within the theoretical articulation of "achieving a well-ordered science."
