The Shanghai Museum East, which took more than 6 years of construction, will be fully open to the public according to the press conference held by the Shanghai Museum on January 8, 2024.

The Bronze Exhibition Hall of the new museum will be opened on a test run on February 2, hosting its first-ever exhibition “Stars over China: The Ancient Shu Civilization of Sanxingdui and Jinsha” — the third episode of “The Making of China”, an exhibition series of cultural relics and archaeological achievements. By the end of June, the open area will reach 80% of the museum’s exhibition space, while by the end of November, the museum will be fully open.

Taking the new cultural mission as a key proposition for future high-quality development, the Shanghai Museum continues to deepen the implementation of its “Grand Museum Program”, by building a new development pattern of “3+X” which consists of three museum locations in the People’s Square, the East branch and the North branch.

Among them, the East branch positions itself to be “the world’s top museum of ancient Chinese art”. The Shanghai Museum East strives to become an important cultural window for “the world to see China”, by presenting a general history of ancient Chinese art, supplemented by themed exhibitions focusing on Shanghai and Jiangnan culture, and launching innovative interactive experience spaces.
