On April 9, a collaborative effort between the Chinese Marxism Institute of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences Publishing House, and the Shanghai Library culminated in the launch of the book “Narratives of Monumental Changes: Interviews of Shanghai’s Cultural Reform and Development” followed by a symposium themed “Forging a Shanghai Model of Cultural Confidence” held in the Shanghai Library.

The book delves into a myriad of topics including cultural system reform, the restructuring of art troupes, the cultivation of spiritual civilization, strategic cultural research, the establishment of major cultural institutions, cultural economic policies, the development of cultural legislation, the enhancement of public cultural services, and the growth of the cultural industry. By conducting in-depth interviews with pivotal figures who have been instrumental in the cultural transformation of Shanghai, the book provides a dynamic account of the city’s cultural reform and development from the onset of the reform and opening-up policies to the year 2010. It highlights the tangible explorations and significant breakthroughs achieved during this period, offering a quintessential example for the urban cultural development of Shanghai.
