On July 4th, 2024, the World AI Conference (WAIC) and the High-Level Meeting on the Global AI Governance convened at the Shanghai World Expo Center. The overarching theme of the conference was “Governing AI for Good and for All.”
The “Shanghai Declaration on the Global AI Governance” was unveiled during the conference, underscoring the collective imperative to nurture the evolution and utilization of AI technologies. The declaration calls for a vigilant approach to ensure these technologies are developed with a focus on safety, reliability, manageability, and equity, thereby enhancing AI's capacity to contribute positively to societal development.
Xue Lan, dean of the Schwarzman College at Tsinghua University and head of the Institute for the International Governance of Artificial Intelligence; Zhou Bowen, director of the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory; and Sassine Ghazi, president and CEO of Synopsys, each presented insights from their respective domains of public policy, scientific research, and industry. They discussed the most recent advancements and contemplations regarding innovation and the secure governance of artificial intelligence.
Additionally, a panel consisting of Turing Award laureates Yao Qi, Raj Reddy, and Manuel Blum, along with Shen Xiangyang, a foreign academician of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, engaged in a profound conversation centered on the synergy of governance and innovation within the AI realm.
