In honor of the 30th anniversary of the restoration and archaeological findings of the Yuanying Pagoda, the Shanghai Museum East is hosting the “The Towering Treasure House: Relics of the Yuanying Pagoda in Shanghai” exhibition from August 14 to November 11.

The Yuanying Pagoda, also referred to as the Xilin Pagoda or Chong’en Pagoda, was initially constructed in 1388 during the 21st year of the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty. It was named in honor of the Zen Master Yuan Ying Rui. Situated in Songjiang District, Shanghai, this pagoda stands as the tallest and most relic-rich ancient structure of its kind in the city, embodying significant historical, artistic, and scientific importance. The exhibition features over 300 artifacts discovered within the pagoda.

Curator of the Shanghai Museum, Chu Xiaobo, has remarked that the conservation efforts and archaeological revelations at the Yuanying Pagoda represent a significant milestone in Shanghai’s archaeological history. The artifacts on display not only reflect the historical significance and distinctive allure of the Jiangnan culture but also serve as a testament to the evolution and cultural vibrancy of ancient towns in Shanghai.
