On June 21st, the Eighth Academic Forum on Image Studies and Global Communication was held in Shanghai. Jointly organized by Shanghai International Studies University and the International Communication Committee of the Chinese Association for the History of Journalism and Communication, the forum was themed “Responding to World Uncertainty: Discourse, Media, and Global Communication.”
Prof. Wayne Wanta from the College of Journalism and Communications at the University of Florida argued that news media should return to their core functions of information screening, verification, and interpretation in order to rebuild public trust. Jiro Takai from Nagoya University in Japan emphasized the importance of enhancing public information literacy and advocating rational thinking. Zhao Yonghua from the School of Journalism at Renmin University of China proposed a shift from “passive response” to “rule shaping” by considering four dimensions: legitimacy, relationship, content, and platform. Wu Ying, dean of the School of Journalism and Communication at Shanghai International Studies University, focused on the current status of Chinese modernization in Arab countries and suggested that China-Arab discourse should further achieve integration in information, relationships, and cultural values.
